Anatomy of a chore

I was asked by Jonas & Co to illustrate storyboards and scenes for a Youtube video series on Reese Witherspoon’s channel about domestic division of labor. The video messages was based on Eve Rodsky’s book Fair Play. Not only was it an illuminating look into the body of research, but it was super fun to illustrate some real world scenarios.

The project was a quick turnaround, about 2 weeks in total for roughly two dozen boards including revisions. The project gave me some valuable experience on prioritizing posing, expressions, and the message at hand.

I began the project by forming a couple of style options for the client to select from.

After the client picked a direction (Style 1), I sketched storyboards first for each script. I was the sole art director on the project. After reviewing some style references, I set to work on creating some compositions that would tell the stories from the scripts.

It was important to use angles here and there that highlighted the drama of certain moments. For instance, this moment needed to have some harsher contrast and darker colors to underscore the stress our main character was feeling. During the duration of this project I tried to was mindful of the intention around color and composition.

There were a couple sections that needed finessing throughout. The client was careful with small details that wouldn’t communicate overly obvious gender roles. It was important to underscore underlying messages of equity and distribution of labor domestic environments.

I did not perform any of the animation on this project, but it was satisfying seeing the end result. The animator made some decisions that I didn’t expect, and made character acting decisions that I would have done differently, but overall it was nice to focus on illustration / design for this project and let the motion be handled by the rest of the team.

The process for the second video was largely similar to the first. We were careful to be inclusive during the whole process. I was corrected a couple times throughout the process on my unconscious bias - always projecting white male characters.

Overall I am pleased with how the project came through. I’m looking forward to working with Jonas & Co again sometime, and working on illustration only projects.
